Charles
Cuperly

THE SPIRIT OF FAMILY

In 1845, Charles Cuperly founded his wine trading house.

Wishing for his business to remain in the family and be passed down through generations, he chose to name it with his family name only, without adding his first name as was common at the time. He thus established the family and legacy values that continue to define the House today.

1824-1898

CLOVIS
Cuperly

THE LEGEND OF A DESTINY

In 1857, by order of Emperor Napoleon III, the Châlons military camp was established on the lands of Mourmelon. An imperial district was created there, where Napoleon III tasted our first cuvées. Several heads of state, including Tsar Nicholas II of Russia, Félix Faure, and King Alfonso XIII of Spain, would later visit, and Clovis presented them with our finest wines.

1862-1937

AUGUSTE
Cuperly

MASTERY

Son of Clovis, Auguste succeeded his father in 1882.

Demanding about wine quality, he created in 1884 the House’s Quality Charter. He continued to supply the French army at Mourmelon and invested in Cuperly-branded rail wagons to export his wines across Europe. He served as mayor of Mourmelon-le-Petit for 22 years and was decorated on July 14, 1931.

1864-1936

LUCIE ANGÈLE
ETIENNE

THE POWER OF INSPIRATION

Lucie Angèle married Auguste on Saturday, December 14, 1889, in Mourmelon-le-Petit. The House became Cuperly-Etienne.

A bold businesswoman, she took charge of the House, managing wine sales and negotiations. She established the first export strategies for the House’s wines.

1890-1955

ROBERT
CUPERLY

THE QUEST FOR PERFECTION

Son of Lucie Angèle and Auguste, Robert was sent on a mission to Russia in 1917, where he met early aviators. In 1919, he married Hermance Lecompère. Together, they developed a prestigious vineyard in Verzy, at the heart of the Montagne de Reims Grand Crus, and chose to relocate the Champagne House there. They dedicated themselves to producing and marketing a prestigious Champagne.

1892-1962

HERMANCE
LECOMPÈRE

DEDICATION

Hermance joined the family business in 1919 following her marriage to Robert. A native of Verzy and deeply attached to family values, she chose to establish the House’s headquarters in her hometown. The daughter of winegrowers and with a meticulous spirit, she supervised the vineyard work and ensured its precise follow-up.

1919-1967

JEAN
CUPERLY

THE ART OF DUTY

Son of Hermance and Robert, Jean served as a soldier in World War II. He received a letter of thanks from General Dwight D. Eisenhower on behalf of U.S. President Harry S. Truman for helping Allied soldiers escape the enemy. Jean married Andrée Duplan on August 24, 1946.

He took full responsibility for the Champagne House after the death of his father Robert in 1955.

1927-2019

ANDRÉE
CUPERLY

DETERMINATION & GENEROSITY

In 1967, Andrée became president and ambassador of the House.

When not traveling for business, she would gather the whole family around home-cooked meals. Altruistic and generous by nature, she joined various associations, including two that were especially dear to her: Roseau, which supports children with leukemia or cancer, and the Association of Women Business Leaders in Champagne.

1949

GÉRARD
CUPERLY

PURSUIT OF EXPERTISE

In 1967, Gérard took over his father’s work alongside his mother Andrée.

He expanded the vineyard by acquiring new plots in the Montagne de Reims.

Passionate about wine, he applied his expertise to the creation of distinctive new cuvées, including the emblematic Prestige Blanc de Noirs Cuvée, now renowned worldwide.

1969

SOPHIE
CUPERLY

A CULTURE OF HERITAGE

Sophie, daughter of Gérard, joined the House in 1997 and has been its president since 2013. Immersed in the House’s DNA and heritage, she highlights the prestigious value of the terroir by working to authenticate and showcase the Grand Cru designation of its Champagnes.
